How Does Wedding Ceremony Insurance Work?
Weddings are a big investment of your time and money; it may be the biggest expense you’ll ever make. Today’s couples are buying wedding insurance to protect themselves from a sudden cancellation, the replacement cost of a damaged wedding dress, or the lost deposit associated with a bankrupt supplier.
Every policy is different, but wedding insurance generally protects you from events beyond your control. Your policy will reimburse you for expenses that you’ve already incurred, such as a deposit. The following are examples where it pays to have wedding ceremony insurance*:
- General Expenses
- Your venue goes bankrupt a week before the reception and you’ve already paid a substantial deposit.
- Your fiancé unexpectedly requires surgery and will be in the hospital on your scheduled wedding day.
- Your wedding presents are stolen from your home the day after the wedding.
- Your dress is damaged beyond repair the week of the big event.
- Honeymoon Expenses
Wedding ceremony insurance will reimburse couples for the non-refundable portion of their honeymoon if the wedding is cancelled because of an insurable event.
- Party Liability Insurance
Liability insurance is an important part of hosting any event. Although you may have liability coverage through another policy, Host Liquor Liability on a wedding policy can include protection for several of your events, such as the rehearsal dinner, ceremony, reception, and gift opening.
What is Not Covered?
Changing your mind about getting married is not covered by a wedding policy. As is the case with all insurance policies, exclusions apply. For example, some wedding gifts and medical emergencies would not be covered.

Edmonton Wedding Insurance
In Edmonton, the cost of wedding ceremony insurance ranges between approximately $200 and $600. This is a reasonable cost, especially if you’re spending a large chunk of money for your big day.
Besides the more obvious wedding insurance policies, there is also optional coverage which can include rental equipment, insurance for the wedding cake, rings, flowers and presents, among others. While spending several hundred dollars extra may not seem like the ideal use of your savings, if there is damage to your wedding venue or an accident happens before the wedding day, you’ll be covered.

Imagine you’ve arranged every tiny detail for your wedding, including how you’re going to get to the venue and reception, catering, photographers, dress and suit, and flowers. These are important questions and something you don’t want to stress about days, or weeks, before your wedding.

You want to save money on your wedding venue so you book the community centre in your neighbourhood. You may have to DIY more of the event details or hire someone to take over decorations, music, and catering but that’s up to you. But, what insurance do you need if you’re serving liquor?
A required liquor licence doesn’t mean you can BYOB. To make sure you’ve covered your bases in terms of what you can and can’t do to serve alcohol to your guests, talk to one of our brokers at Alpine to get the information you need. Also ask about events and liability insurance for your wedding day, which is separate from general wedding insurance.
